Green smoothies are a great way to get a high dose of nutrients and make a great natural detox.

Here are a few tips to get you started.

1. Ease into it.

You don’t have to jump right into a smoothie with 10 different vegetables. Give yourself time to hand-craft a smoothie that you love. (Remember, you want this to become a lifelong habit, so you gotta love it!) Also, you want to give your body a chance to adjust to all the fiber, which you probably haven’t been getting in your regular diet.

2. Start with fruit.

Most people already like making fruit smoothies. That is a great place to start. If you like fruit smoothies, start by making your favorite fruit recipe and simply modify that recipe by adding 2 handfuls of organic spinach.

After a week of that, slowly start adding more and more things to your recipe and slowly start reducing the total fruit until the fruit to vegetable ratio is closer to a 1:5 or 1:10 ratio.

3. Find a protein powder you like.

As time goes on, this ingredient will be less important, but if you are picky about taste, the right protein powder can be a huge help in smoothing out the taste of the veggies as you get started.

The best strategy is to find a protein powder you like even if just mixed plain in water. Then, you slowly start adding the veggies, etc. from there. We use Sunwarrior Protein and love it.

4. Start Experimenting

Below are some different recipes you can use to get started. Remember, the best approach is to start with something basic & then build from there over time. Develop the habit first and then build on your ingredient list.

If you do not already have a smoothie you like, here is one you can try.

  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder
  • 1 banana
  • 2-3 cups spinach
  • some ice

Dump it all in your Vita-Mix and blend baby blend! Add in the ice at the very end.

Once you get used to this one, you can slowly start adding additional produce from the Mr. Grinch recipe. Over time, you will be consuming a host of beneficial nutrient-dense vegetables and feeling Awesome!

This was one of our original green smoothies. The recipe has changed over the years, but this is a good starter.

  • 1 cup water (or unsweetened almond milk)
  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder
  • 1/2 banana
  • 2 stalks of celery
  • 1 carrot
  • 1 tomato
  • 2 cups spinach
  • some broccoli
  • some cucumber
  • some cinnamon (couple shakes)
  • some ice

Dump it all in your Vita-Mix and blend baby blend! Add in the ice at the very end.

Here is what we have for our 2 snacks every day. We have lovingly nicknamed it “mr. grinch”, because it’s a mean one.  This is NOT a green smoothie you will want to try your first time out (beginners should start with “the kermit”).   You will need to work yourself up to something like this.

stuff you will need:

  • 1 ½ cup water
  • 1 scoop protein (we use Sunwarrior)
  • ½  banana (peeled)
  • ½ orange (peeled)
  • 1 small pieces of pineapple
  • 1 tomato
  • 1 carrot
  • 1 stalk of celery
  • 10 sprigs parsley
  • 6  dandelion greens
  • ⅔ cup broccoli
  • 1 leaf – red chard
  • 1 leaf – collard greens
  • 1 leaf – kale
  • 1 leaf – bok choy
  • 1 white mushroom
  • 2-3 cups spinach
  • 1 small slice of ginger root
  • 1 cup ice

what to do with the stuff:

  • place all stuff  in your Vita-mix
  • turn on (blend until smooth)
  • put ice in at the end so it gets cold.

You will have to experiment with the amounts of liquid, ice and produce to get the consistency that you like.
