How to avoid that ‘afternoon crash’ at work

We have all experienced it! One of your co-workers forgot to bring their lunch, so they wrangle a group of people in the office to head out to grab a bite. You start to say, “Nah, I have my Lean Cuisine. I can hardly wait to microwave that bad boy up ;)” But, before you can even finish that sentence, you find yourself walking down the street to the local taco shop!

One carne asada burrito later, you are abruptly jarred awake by your face slamming into your keyboard. Looking up, you realize you just finished and sent that email to your CEO!

It says:

I just wanted to thank you for that wonderful speech you gave to the company yesterday, I find you very mmmmmmmmmmmmm…. ;O)

After a conference call with the HR department, you are back at your desk again!

OK, maybe you have not experienced this exact scenario, but I am sure you have experienced the afternoon sleepies. That is when you head to off to the kitchen or Starbucks for that good ol’ afternoon boost to get you through the rest of your day. Right?!

I know this is true because this was my life for a long time (well, luckily not the email part).

Today, my energy is constant throughout the day. I do not rely on coffee or soda to keep me going anymore.  I am going to share exactly what I do to keep my energy constant after lunch.

Before I share the secret, you will need a quick Endocrinology lesson. Wait!  Before your head falls on your keyboard and clicks that little X, its not what you think, I promise! I am not going to bore you with a lesson on ghrelin or leptin, but rather I am going to share a story about ‘Las Vegas’, ‘Sex’ and the ‘All-You-Can-Eat Buffet’.

I can’t remember the year exactly, but I am guessing it was about 12-13 years ago. I was in Las Vegas with three of my business partners at the time. We went to a really nice buffet. In the booth, we were all planning what we were going to eat and one of them mentioned the ’20 minute rule’. I was not familiar with this at the time.

He said, “You have 20 minutes to eat all you want before your stomach tells your brain you are full”. We checked our watches and we were off! Sure enough, 20 minutes went by and we were stuffed!

Our bodies had WAY more than enough calories on the first plate of food we had at the buffet. The 4th and 5th servings were just for fun and to get our ‘money’s worth’. Kids, what are you gonna do?!

The reason I am sharing this with you is this, the 20 minute rule, works both ways.

Do NOT take my word for this. This is a key point. You need to experience this for yourself. (No, not the ‘All-You-Can-Eat Buffet’).  I need you to learn a little about how your body works.

Here is a quick and easy experiment I would like you to do. I want you to do this because this experiment will stick with you and really help you in those situations when you are super hungry.

Here are the steps:

One day at lunch time when you are home and super hungry (you know one of those days you could eat a whole Dominos pizza all by yourself), do these 4 steps:

STEP 1: Take mental note of how hungry you are on a scale of 1-10.

STEP 2: Eat a 1/2 can of organic black beans (or pinto beans) with salsa & some water to wash it down.

STEP 3: Set a timer for 20 minutes.

STEP 4: After the timer goes off, make note of your hunger level on the same 1-10 scale.

I bet your hunger levels are dramatically decreased, if not fully satisfied. The point is, the right food can satisfy us, if we give our bodies the time to say, “Hey, we are good down here, stop eating!”

So now that you have this info under your belt so to speak, I can share with you what type of food is going to give you that constant flow of energy after lunch and well into your afternoon at work!

The types of foods that will give you this constant energy are basically whole plant-based foods. This means no processed foods and sugars, which are the ultimate cause of the crashing.

Here is exactly what I eat at work for lunch. This is what keeps my energy constant after lunch and keeps me alert and awake (without coffee or a sugar boost).  I made a little video and here is a link to the exact recipe and some nutrition facts:

OK I know exactly what you are thinking! What about the ‘Sex’ part, right?!  I know, I know, unfortunately, I want to keep these posts short. So, I will share that part of the story next time!

In fact, we will be sharing a whole series of these work-related posts, including how to get your self to actually implement this stuff!  SO stay tuned and sign-up for our email list here or at the top of this post so you can be notified when the next post in this series is released. You won’t want to miss it! Especially the sex part ;).

In the meantime, try eating the mason jar lunches for 1 week and see what happens. I double dog dare you!
